Bachmetjevas Viktoras

Period of stay: 03.01.2021-05.31.2021

Evaluation sheet for departing Fellows

  1. What would you consider to be the major benefits of your stay at IWM?

The major benefit for me undoubtedly has been the possibility to have a stretch of time devoted solely to the translation project. This was only possible because of the financial support offered by IWM, the office space and even the eating arrangements and the help of the staff. Not having to worry about other details – however major or minor – was the outstanding benefit.
In addition, it was great to meet people working on different projects in different fields from different countries. It is a pity I could not socialise more but even during this unique time the Institute feels like a special place.

  1. Was the event programme of the IWM attractive and interesting for you?

Yes, there were some interesting themes covered, and although I could not attend all events, but I definitely will keep my eye on the evens taking place at the Institute.

  1. Do you have any criticisms of any aspect of the Institute’s program and operations?
Please include any suggestions for improvement.

I can’t think of any. It was a pure pleasure and I would very much like to come back.

  1. Is there anything else you would like to let us know regarding your stay at the IWM?

Just my thanks to all the staff and apologies to the kitchen staff for managing to mess up the registration not once, not twice, but several times.

Final Report sheet for departing Fellows

As mentioned in the “Terms of Award” agreement, we would kindly ask you to submit your final report on your activities, travels, talks and accomplishments during your research stay. Please be as specific and concise as possible!

In particular, we may ask you to list books or essays that have been written or worked on at the IWM, that have either been published or accepted for publication or that you wish to submit for publication. Describe briefly the nature of the work and give names of publishers or publications, dates and other relevant facts.

We would be very grateful if you could provide us with a copy of your publication(s) for our library or, if this is not possible, contact our librarian with the publication details. We would also like to ask you to list any prizes or awards you have received or will receive, as well as any scholarships and grants you have received or will receive.

During my stay I concentrated on the translation of Emmanuel Levinas’s masterpiece Totalite et infini. Although the beginning of my stay was interrupted by a positive diagnosis of COVID-19, I still managed to end up with almost full first draft of the translation. Although the book will appear at the end of 2022 at the earliest, I will definitely make sure to mention the fellowship and that the book reaches the Institute in due time.

Also – and quite unexpectedly – I was invited and happy to join the panel on the IWM webinar on Belarus. I would very much welcome to join future event at IWM.
